Express Entry & Permanent Residence

Express Entry: become a permanent resident of Canada

Express Entry is Canada's main system for skilled workers who want permanent residence. A complete, accurate profile and the right strategy for your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score make a real difference.

The three Express Entry programs

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): for people with skilled work experience in Canada.
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW): for skilled workers with experience abroad who meet the points grid.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST): for qualified tradespeople with a job offer or certificate of qualification.

Many provincial nominee programs, including Alberta's, also connect to Express Entry; a provincial nomination adds a large number of CRS points.

How Express Entry works

  1. Prepare: take an approved language test (for example IELTS General, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF or TCF) and, for education outside Canada, get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
  2. Create your profile: your answers place you in the pool with a CRS score based on age, education, language, work experience and other factors.
  3. Draws: IRCC holds regular rounds, including general draws and category-based draws for certain occupations or French ability, and invites the highest-ranked candidates.
  4. Invitation to Apply (ITA): you then have a limited time to submit a complete application for permanent residence (eAPR) with all supporting documents.
  5. Decision: medicals, police certificates and biometrics, then your Confirmation of Permanent Residence.

Ways to improve your CRS score

  • Retaking your language test. Higher scores, especially in both official languages, can add significant points.
  • Gaining more skilled work experience, in Canada or abroad.
  • Completing further education or getting an ECA for a credential you did not claim.
  • Applying for a provincial nomination.
  • Including your spouse's language results and education where that helps.

How we help

We assess which program fits, map out how to raise your score, create or review your profile, and prepare a complete, consistent eAPR after an invitation, including employment reference letters that meet IRCC's requirements, proof of funds where required, and explanations for gaps. Incomplete reference letters and missing documents are among the most common reasons for refusal.

Frequently asked questions

What CRS score do I need?

There is no fixed score. Cut-offs change with every draw and differ between general and category-based draws. IRCC publishes the results of each round.

Do I need a job offer for Express Entry?

No, most candidates are invited without one. A job offer can help in some programs, and rules on extra points have changed over time, so we check the current rules for you.

How long is an Express Entry profile valid?

A profile stays in the pool for up to 12 months. If you are not invited, you can create a new profile if you still meet the requirements.

Is proof of funds required?

Federal Skilled Worker and Federal Skilled Trades applicants usually need proof of settlement funds unless they are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. Canadian Experience Class applicants do not.
