Visitor visa (TRV) or eTA?
Depending on their passport, visitors need either a temporary resident visa (TRV) or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to fly to Canada. Citizens of many African and Middle Eastern countries need a visitor visa. Officers must be satisfied that the visitor has a genuine purpose, enough money for the trip, and will leave Canada at the end of the stay.
A strong visitor visa application usually shows
- A clear purpose and itinerary, with an invitation letter from the host in Canada where relevant.
- Financial documents: bank statements, income, and who is paying for the trip.
- Ties to the home country: employment, business, property, family and previous travel.
- Consistent answers and documents, with certified translations where needed.
The Super Visa for parents and grandparents
The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents stay for long periods: up to five years per entry, on a multiple-entry visa that can be valid for up to ten years. In general, it requires:
- A letter of invitation from the child or grandchild in Canada, with a promise of financial support.
- Proof that the host meets the minimum income requirement for their family size.
- Private medical insurance that meets IRCC's minimum coverage and validity requirements.
- An immigration medical exam.
Extensions and refusals
Visitors who want to stay longer can apply for a visitor record before their status ends. If a visa was refused, we review the refusal letter and, if useful, the officer's notes before preparing a stronger new application.
How we help

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a visitor visa and a Super Visa?
A regular visitor visa usually allows stays of up to six months at a time. A Super Visa is only for parents and grandparents and allows stays of up to five years per entry, with extra requirements such as minimum income and medical insurance.
Does an invitation letter guarantee a visa?
No. It is one supporting document. The officer looks at the whole application, especially funds and ties to the home country.
My parent's visa was refused. What can we do?
Read the refusal reasons carefully, strengthen the weak points, and reapply. We can request the officer notes (GCMS notes) to see exactly why it was refused.
Can a visitor work in Canada?
Generally no. Visitors cannot work without authorization, though some business activities are allowed. We can check your specific situation.
